新型冠状病毒感染的肺炎疫情在中国发生后，美国共和党反华参议员汤姆·科顿（Tom Cotton）忙得不可开交，发表了一系列“无知言论”，宣称病毒是武汉实验室泄露的生化武器。

他要求美国政府立刻封杀中国，并要求所有美国人逃离中国。

文章在副标题里写道，这位共和党议员在过去一周散播谣言、制造恐慌。

《赫芬顿邮报》在文中写道，科顿这样的阴谋论——武汉实验室泄露病毒，早就被全球学者专家轮番揭批过。但美国的街头小报和保守派民粹媒体嗅到这抹黑中国的谣言后，仍不肯放过，四处发文扩散，其中就包括右翼网站《华盛顿时报》。

Cotton suggested the coronavirus could havecome from a Chinese “super laboratory that works with the world’s most deadly pathogens,”boostingadebunkedfringetheorycirculating among tabloids andconservative media outlets.

与《华盛顿时报》只有一字之差的美国主流媒体之一《华盛顿邮报》也忍不住批前者称，尽管尚无公开证据，但类似于《华盛顿时报》传播的这种谣言，现在在社交媒体上和阴谋论网站上到处都是。

Despite little public evidence, the theory has spread widely on social media, to conspiracy theory websites and insome international news outlets.

美国高官满嘴跑火车带头造谣，惹怒了众多业界专家、学者。

哈佛教授出头怒批：“极其荒谬”

哈佛大学流行病学和免疫学副教授迈克·米纳告诉《赫芬顿邮报》，“这种说法太荒谬”。“所有迹象都指向一种病原体，该病原体已在动物体内传播并且传染给了人类。这样的传播方式对此类病毒而言很常见，他没有任何理由可以这样说。”

“It’s a ridiculous assertion,” said Dr. Michael Mina, assistant professor of epidemiology and immunology at Harvard University.

“All signs point to a pathogen that has been circulating in animals and jumped to humans. It’s pretty common for these viruses and there’s no good reason for him to be saying something like that.”

除此以外，还有一票“业界大神”出来澄清，称这样的阴谋论简直是胡扯。《华盛顿邮报》援引了相关领域5名专家的评论，他们均表示，武汉实验室泄露病毒的论调简直无知，并给读者进行了简单的科普。

美国罗格斯大学化学生物学教授理查德·艾布赖特（Richard Ebright）：

根据病毒基因组和特性，没有任何迹象表明它是一种工程病毒。

“Based on the virus genome and properties there is no indication whatsoever that it was an engineered virus,”said Richard Ebright, a professor of chemical biology at Rutgers University.

马里兰州生物安全专家蒂姆·特雷文（Tim Trevan）：

“绝大多数新型、重大疾疫情……都不是人为的。

“The vast majority of new, nasty diseases … come from nature,”he said.

Milton Leitenberg, an expert on chemical weapons at the University of Maryland, said he and other analysts around the world had discussed the possibility that weapons development at the Wuhan lab could have led to the coronavirus outbreak in a private email chain but that no one had found convincing evidence to support the theory.

新美国安全中心的研究员埃尔莎·卡尼亚（Elsa Kania）：

别再为了政治目的宣传/暗示阴谋论了。病毒总是会进行抗原转变，我们都必须要接受这个问题。更可能的是环境变化加剧了转变。

专家劝美国官员闭上嘴：后果尤为严重

疫情爆发导致谣言四起，在社交媒体上尤为严重。

《赫芬顿邮报》在文中称，许多传染病专家提醒大家，在他们对疫情的危害性做出评估期间，大家要有耐心，尤其不要接受科顿制造的恐惧。

…many infectious disease experts have urged patience while they assess the true dangers of the outbreak and cautioned against the kind offearmongeringthat Cotton has embraced.

文章称，疫情爆发衍生了大量虚假信息，社交媒体疯狂转发虚假报道，网络诈骗人员企图利用疫情获利，一些阴谋论者甚至提倡饮用危险的漂白剂作为治疗药物。

The outbreak has resulted in massive amounts of disinformation, viral social media falsehoods and onlinegrifters attempting to cash in on the virus. Some conspiracy theorists have even promoteddrinking dangerous bleach as a cure.

The virus has also led to anti-Chinese sentiment in numerous countries, prompting local officials and community organizations to denouncesurging racismagainst Chinese communities.

“Misinformation around these outbreaks is definitely a problem,” said Dr. Tara Kirk Sell, senior scholar at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “When we undermine trust and get in the way of a public health response, those things can be really dangerous and really bad for trying to stop an outbreak.”

科顿夹杂私人政治观点、毫无根据的指责引发业界学者的不满。报道称，实际上中国已经做得很好了，就连美国官员和国际组织都称赞中国的反应速度。

卫生专家称，事实上，中国已经相当迅速地采取措施应对新型冠状病毒，并提醒国际组织官员注意该问题，此外，还分享该病毒的信息帮助流行病学专家进行研究和追踪。

But China has actually been fairly quick to address the virus and to alert international officials to the problem, according to health experts, and has as shared information on the virus that has helped epidemiologists study and track it.

针对“新型冠状病毒来源于武汉实验室泄露”的言论，该实验室的中国学者做出回应：用生命担保，与实验室没关系。

中国科学院武汉病毒所研究员石正丽2月2日下午3时左右，在自己个人微信朋友圈发文：2019年新型冠状病毒是大自然给人类不文明生活习惯的惩罚，我石正丽用我的生命担保，与实验室没有关系。奉劝那些相信并传播谣传的人，闭上你们的臭嘴。同时转发这个打脸消息：印度学者已经决定撤回这篇预印本文章。

武汉本地媒体记者通过中科院武汉分院工作人员，向她本人求证此条朋友圈消息属实，并获准发布。

作为石正丽的长期合作伙伴，美国非盈利组织环保生态健康联盟疾病生态学家彼得·达萨克（Peter Daszak）在接受《科学》（Science）杂志采访时表示，每当新疾病、新病毒出现时，都会产生诸如实验室泄漏或者生物工程制造一类的“阴谋论”。“这令人羞耻！”

…herlongtime collaborator, disease ecologist Peter Daszak of the EcoHealth Alliance, dismissed Ebright’s conjecture. “Every time there’s an emerging disease, a new virus, the same story comes out: This is a spillover or the release of an agent or a bioengineered virus,” Daszak says. “It’s just a shame.”
